I am pleased to announce and invite your participation a new Internet2 Health Sciences Security Special Interest Group
(SIG).
The scope of the Internet2 Health Sciences Security SIG is to promote policies, practices, and projects that overcome
security and privacy-related barriers to the adoption of emerging Internet technologies in the health sciences.
The Internet2 Health Sciences Security SIG will work closely with the Educause/Internet2 Security Task Force. The
Internet2 Health Sciences Security SIG will focus primarily on issues that uniquely concern the health sciences
community that spring mainly from the high level of sensitivity and criticality of health sciences data and
applications.

You can read more about the newly formed SIG at:
http://health.internet2.edu/WorkingGroups/Security.html
We also invite you to participate in e-mail list for the new Security SIG, healthsec () internet2 edu. You can
subscribe to this list by sending the following:
subscribe healthsec () internet2 edu Your Name
in the body of an email message addressed to: listproc () internet2 edu
In addition to the general interest areas summarized above, here are some specific questions we would like to address
in the months ahead:
How can we design and operate our networks to enable the high performance applications we need while providing
adequate security?
How, in particular can we get reliable and secure high performance videoconferences across our network perimeters?
(Jill Gemmill, JGemmill () uab edu and I are working on this topic for the Fall member meeting and we're looking for
interested participants)
What are the security and privacy-related barriers to deploying advanced Internet-enabled applications for the health
sciences and how should these be addressed?
What are best practices and policies for the health sciences to enable advanced applications while ensuring security
and the privacy of protected health information?
What specific research, development and educational goals and deliverables should the group adopt?
Should Internet2 and in particular the Health Sciences Security SIG take an active role in homeland defense as well as
national efforts to develop a national network to fight epidemics like SARS? See the recent article in Computerworld
concerning this effort by the eHealth Initiative, www.ehealthinitiative.org. Oregon, for example has started RAINS,
the Regional Alliance for Infrastructure and Network Security, www.oregonrains.org. Would it make sense to take
advantage of the unique resources and talents available to Internet2 for the benefit of Homeland Defense?
Please contact Jere Retzer, retzerj () ohsu edu for further information, your thoughts on these questions and other
ideas the group should consider. We are very interested in topics as well as papers for the Fall Member Meeting,
October 13-16 in Indianapolis.
Thanks
Jere, (503) 494-3720
