Re: Firewalls and Research

We currently use several firewalls on campus including our border. We
prevent all inbound except port 80 and eventually we would like to proxy the
traffic inbound on port 80. At first we were worried about the response
that we would receive by doing this, but the response was very limited. We
spent most of time teaching the researchers and scientists on how
applications communicate and guiding them on how to make requests for
access.

In the future we plan on limiting outbound connections. It seems to me that
funding guidelines are starting to require that you have security measures
in place before you can even be considered for grants. We are also spending
more time in helping them determine the best solution for technology that
might be required for their grants.

Subject: [SECURITY] Firewalls and Research

Hi all,
I would like to get a feel for how many .edu facilities currently
have firewalls at their border. If you have a firewall at your border, how
has it affected your scientists and researchers ability to do research and
obtain funding? Thanks in advance.
