At the University of New Brunswick we did the same migration from a 1620 to a 360/50 at about the same time. The room had no air conditioning and we used to shut the machine down in the evening in the summer when it got too hot. As a grad student we sometimes got the whole machine as a Personal Computer for late night and weekend work. The front panel switches were interesting and useful once one persuaded the IBM techs to lets us in on the inner secrets.

A number of years later we tore apart the controller for the 2260 graphic terminals and lo and behold it had core memories used to generate the character for the screen. I still have that board and have planned to frame it.

That was what I thought of when someone mentioned
front panel switches! Only it was on a 360/50 way
back in '69 when I started. NDSU had gone from an
IBM 1620 to an IBM 360/50 with the help of an NSF
loan about a year earlier. For a while there was
such a gap in processing speed we'd actually shut
down the computer in the evening. ;-)

Some of you with 360 experience may recognize this...
