The frequency has always been settable by the system admin. At least in the early days, the default was weekly, but the frequency set by the user has always been carried over by upgrades.
With Mountain Lion, there's no GUI method to set that frequency at all without resorting to third party utilities. The document currently doesn't address checking to see if automatic updates are enabled at all in System Preferences - personally I think that's even more important than telling people how to do a manual check. This is a nitpick, but I would replace "OS/X" with "OS X" and drop the "Mac," since that's the official naming from Apple, at least these days. For applications purchased through the App Store, the "Software Update" method described in step #2 should pick up updates for those as well. -- Julian Y.
