Encryption of personal equipment

What guidelines or requirements do you give your constituents, especially faculty, regarding encryption of 
institutional data on personal devices?  I know a lot of faculty have scads of data on personal devices, and want to be 
able to give them some options for protecting it.  Telling them they can't store the data doesn't work, so at least I 
would like to help them be smarter about it.
