Ross,

The 510 is recently EOL'ed (End of Lifed) hardware. It will be supported via TAC for another couple of years via support contracts (SmartNet).

I'd be careful in buying such a unit from an auction site. You want to check how much flash and DRAM is in the unit and make sure that it can run PIX OS v4.4, v5.2 or 5.3.

If you want to order a unit from Cisco I'd suggest a 506 (based on your time frame). If you can wait a little while you could get a 501.

There are Internet based labs where you can purchase lab time. I'd look at

http://www.groupstudy.com/links/index.html (under Commercial Websites)

or

http://www.inacom-msn.com/inacompage.asp?Section=inet-ciscorack

The best way to purchase Cisco equipment is direct from the web site. Go to http://www.cisco.com. All you need is a credit card.

Regards,

Brian

P.S. There is a PIX Mailing List at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PIX_Firewall

Subject: [fw-wiz] Cisco PIX

Hello,

I hope someone out there can give me a bit of advice. I am taking my
CCNA in a week or so, and after that plan on attaining the "Cisco
Security Specialist" designation. Unfortunately there's only one place
around that gives these classes and they charge quite a bit. So I've
got enough machines I've decided to get a PIX, the books, and study this
on my own. My question is keeping in mind that I'm on a budget what
model PIX should I get for study purposes(Cisco PIX exams, "PIX Firewall
Fundamentals" & "Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced")? I've looked at
models such as the PIX classic, 506, 510, and the 515 (although it's a
bit pricey. I've seen several PIX 510's on ebay for around $1200 or so,
is this model adequate? Or is it so antiquated that most things have
changed with the new PIX models 506, 515, and 520's, etc? So basically
I'd only be studying what was on the exams when that product was current
a couple of years ago. Also do any of you know of good places/sites to
pick up PIX units?

Thanks so much for the help,

Ross

Note: I've called Cisco several times and gotten absolutely nowhere.
