I was referring to me having the 9mm, versus having to pick up a knife.
The criminals will always have a weapon, and I have a wife and young
children, so running out the door is not an option.

If the guy's got a meat cleaver, I can probably hum the first 
few bars of "Gimme Three Steps" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and have a 
reasonably good chance if I make it out the door, because I 
just have to run faster than him at some speed under 10 
meters a second, and *maybe* dodge one thrown attempt in the 
20-30 meters/sec range.

That's a hell of a lot better odds than dodging every round 
in the clip at the average muzzle velocity of a 9mm.. :)
