Wow, I never thought that my original posting would have gone this long.
The next question logically is then: with so much low hanging fruit we're all aware of, how do we get the easy convictions to the right people? Can we get an ftc person on the list? Anyone know anyone?
I have a contact at the FTC, but (before suggesting them to be added to any private lists) remember their enforcement missions: antitrust and consumer protection. The basic consumer protection statute enforced by the Federal Trade Commission is Section 5(a) of the FTC Act, which provides that "unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce...are...declared unlawful." (15 U.S.C. Sec. 45(a)(1)). Safe Web amended Sec. 5(a) "unfair or deceptive acts or practices" to include such acts or practices involving foreign commerce that cause or are likely to cause reasonably foreseeable injury within the United States or involve material conduct occurring within the United States. So, unless there is "unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce" to U.S. citizens they will have *no* authority. --Keith Keith Young, Security Official Department of Technology Services Montgomery County, Maryland phone - (240) 777-2955 _______________________________________________ Fun and Misc security discussion for OT posts. https://linuxbox.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/funsec Note: funsec is a public and open mailing list.
