"Windows XP and Vista have started installing updates at shutdown, in certain
cases, without displaying a warning or requesting permission, according to
reports by several readers.

As evidence for the prosecution, I have deliberately stayed away from the
Silverlight "update." Today I was checking my plugins in Firefox (due to the
Shockwave vulnerability) and found Silverlight.

Over the past few months we have noticed some times where the "shutdown" has
taken times running over half an hour, without any notice or options saying that
updates were being installed.

(On the other hand, I recently had to spend 9 hours updating a friend's machine,
since he had somehow set the update time to 3 am, and hadn't installed anything
since January.)
