Has anyone had any bad experiences working with dd and netcat? If not
I'll consider my question answered.

Yes - good success. Quite scalable. When using it to duplicate PCs we found that we could easily clone 50+ multiboot-workstations from a single GZIP image on a server - okay, that we had a Gbit/s-interface on the server and a decent, switched network infrastructure.

A few occasions we encountered problems whemn re-installing and the target disk had corrupt error relocating tables and/or was too small. The combination simply is too simple to screw up.
