As a small counterpoint - I find them interesting for two reasons:

It gives me some small indication of the health of the industry, and of
particular companies, and
(to me) more importantly, it tells me who might be doing interesting work in
my geographic area.
Developing/integrating c2 s/w is what I currently do for a living, but
systems and network security is my passion.
