I've had Akamai hit up my site plenty of times for caching and have block out responding to few too many ping requests, 
replies, errors, etc. and it works just fine for their caching purposes.

It seems to be some sort of keepalive procedure they implement for their service and shouldn't be a big deal unless you 
have an anal monitoring system you can lower the flags on alerts so it doesn't annoy you or simply block them 
altogether... Your choice but I still don't see how this is a problem.

A customer of mine has been hit with large amounts of ICMP packets from
akaimaitechnologies.com servers. I've seen these before and considered them
a nusiance, but I feel 1600 ICMP packets a week to hosts that can not
respond due to being behind a firewall is excessive, and it fills logs
pretty quickly. The company response was that they use the pings to better
serve the customers and to monitor usage.

You can have addresses removed from their list of hosts by sending an email
to the hostmaster listed below:
