on IRIX, a very useful tool is sockwatcher, available in binary form only
for IRIX 6.5 and later:

        ftp://ftp.sgi.com/sgi/sockwatch/

use inst to install the package. the out format is similar to lsof, but a
little more verbose.

to SGI: please release the source of this tool, the utility of it is
greater than lsof in many applications, and has a nice format. you'd be
doing the community a great service.
