We also get big phishing spikes like this from time to time. Our big spikes usually include phishes for several local banks instead of just the typical online ones. These are generally sent through a dictionary attack (random US surnames at domain dot com) and to a short list of real addresses. I guess that they are targeted at a list of businesses in a particular region for each batch of the phishing spam.
