          JAPANESE ENCODING SYSTEMS

The Japanese have a basic character set standard
(and a supplemental one) of nearly 7,000
characters.  This requires an encoding system
beyond one 8-bit byte.  The Japanese use three
multiple-byte encoding systems: JIS, Shift-JIS
and EUC.


Ken Lunde, author of "Understanding Japanese
Information Processing", will explain the
differences between these three systems and
the familiar ASCII.
