        The man President Clinton wanted for next Secretary of Defense... has
bowed out.
        Bobby Ray Inman said he did NOT want to be subjected to distortions
of his record, his character, or his reputation. He plans a news
conference in an hour to give more details. The President has accepted
Inman's resignation ``with regret.''
