AT&T BELL LABS SCIENTISTS SAY THEY HAVE BUI

  COMMUNICATIONS DAILY via First! : AT&T Bell Labs scientists say they have
built experimental  "16-lane information superhighway" capable of carrying
40 billion  bits per sec. of information on single optical fiber.  That's 10
times capacity of world's fastest commercial system, Bell Labs said.
Research team said it set new record for lightwave transmission,  sending
2.5 billion bits per sec. -- error free -- over each of 16  wavelengths
through 900 miles of fiber.
