Don't miss the "Comment" in the May 16 New Yorker called "Just a
Datahighway."  Written by Bob Wright (from New Republic), it is quite
positive about EFF and our Jeffersonian vision.




Wright says:


"Datahighway architecture can assume two basic forms.  One is the cable-TV
'tree-and-branch' model. A centralized programmer (TCI say) sends out
hundreds of channels and maintains a library from which videos and other
cyberservices can be summoned.  The second kind of architecture is modelled
on the phone system -- a "switched network," or diffuse web.  People on
this dataway are not just consumers but, potentially providers....


"....This decentralized model has been called Jeffersonian by its premier
advocate, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is a eclectic
Washington lobby group (mostly business people and technonerds).  The other
model has been called, with no doubt unfair but certainly evocative
hyperbole, Stalinist.
