REMINDER: NIST Usability Engineering Symposium on March 3
Don't miss the chance to hear some of the most prominent experts in the
field for a minimal registration fee of $75. Other meetings of this caliber
can cost more than 3-6 times this amount.
We want to be sure that both government and industry personnel
are well represented because usability engineering is an important enabling
technology. Properly applied, it will increase productivity and reduce costs

* Purpose:
UE2's purpose remains the same as the 1996 symposium: it will once
again bring together industry and government to exchange information
and strategies for achieving effectiveness, efficiency, and
satisfaction in computer-based government systems. New for 1997 is a
special focus on measurement and methods.
* Re-Inventing Government:
Computers are supporting increasingly complex tasks which then require
progressively more sophisticated and interactive systems. The fiscal
necessity of employing commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) products with
legacy data increases the complexity of designing such systems.
Consequently, application of human computer interaction techniques
becomes increasingly important to ensure that usable systems are built.
This is especially evident in government systems because of the large
number (and high cost) of custom computer systems and legacy system
integration and updates.
Simply put, it is critical for government and industry to implement the
best practices now available to ensure the usability of new and
re-engineered government systems.

Directions to NIST

The symposium will be held at the National Institute of Standards and
Technology, Administration Building (101), Green Auditorium, Gaithersburg,
Maryland.
* From the Airport:
For attendees who will be arriving by air at Washington National or
Dulles International Airports, the hotel is accessible by using
Suburban Airport Shuttle, 301/279-2222. Commercial van service is
available from Baltimore-Washington International Airport by calling
BWI Limo at 410/441-2345.
* By Metrorail:
Gaithersburg is also accessible by Metrorail from Washington National
Airport. Take the Yellow Line train marked "Mt. Vernon Square" to
"Gallery Place" and transfer to a Red Line train marked "Shady Grove"
to the Shady Grove station. Service is every 6 to 15 minutes depending
on the time of day. The time from National to Gaithersburg is about 55
minutes. Cabs are available from the Shady Grove metro to the hotel.
A NIST shuttle van operates for official visitors from the Shady Grove
metro station to NIST. The van leaves the Shady Grove station on the
quarter and three-quarter hour (e.g. 8:15, 8:45, . . .4:45, 5:15) from
the west side "Kiss and Ride" parking lot.
* By Car:
Gaithersburg is located about 25 miles northwest of Washington, DC via
Interstate Rt. 270 North. To reach the hotel, take Exit 11, Rt. 124
East, Montgomery Village Ave. At the second light, proceed straight
across Rt. 355 (Frederick Ave.). At the next light, turn left onto
Russell Avenue (Fire House Station on the left corner) The hotel is on
your right. To reach NIST, follow Rt. I-270 North to Exit 10, Rt. 117
West, Clopper Rd. At the first light, turn left onto the NIST grounds.
Follow the signs to the Administration Building.
