Environmental Groups Announce $11 Million Education Campaign on Global Warming

WASHINGTON, October 6, 1999 -- A coalition of national environmental
organizations announced today that they are mounting an $11 million
campaign this fall to educate the public about global warming. The
campaign includes the largest television advertising campaign in
their history and a web site that will quickly and easily allow
concerned citizens to contact their members of Congress about the
issue.

The TV spots, sponsored by the National Environmental Trust, the
Union of Concerned Scientists and Physicians for Social
Responsibility will run on over 200 stations from coast to coast
beginning this week.

The cost of the advertising portion of the campaign is $8 million --
an additional $3 million will be spent on grassroots organizing
around the issue. Central to the grassroots campaign is a new
interactive website, www.HotEarth.NET. The site is hosted by the
National Environmental Trust.

www.HotEarth.net is powered by "Grassroots Manager," a new service
from Issue Dynamics, Inc. that uses Internet technology to empower
traditional grassroots communications with members of Congress.
Utilizing a combination of database technology, enhanced e-mail and
Internet communications, "Grassroots Manager," sends email Action
Alerts to supporters who register with www.HotEarth.net that include
response mechanisms that can be activated the minute the email is
read. The response mechanisms include traditional letter writing,
faxes, email and --- most importantly---telephone calls --- which
are automatically targeted to the appropriate legislators.

"Global warming is a clear and present danger to Americans, but the
Internet can be a powerful tool in grassroots organizing," National
Environmental Trust President Philip E. Clapp said. "Through our
advertising campaign and www.HotEarth.NET, we will be able to
identify concerned citizens and supporters, communicate with them
effectively and mobilize them to take action on this important issue
like never before."

In addition to the action components of the web site, visitors to
www.HotEarth.NET can use a "Global Warming Calculator," which
allows visitors to calculate the amount of global warming pollution
their automobile produces and what their annual fuel cost is, based
on average prices in their state.

NET is also sponsoring the Pollution Solutions Tour, which
highlights energy-efficient and less polluting products already on
the market, such as that will be introduced within the next 5 years.
The tour will feature several alternative fuel vehicles and a
mobile home trailer containing a variety of hands-on energy-
efficient product displays. Beginning Oct. 4, the Tour will visit
36 cities over the next two months.
