ICANN Voting Suspended, US Shutout Looms

Due to a voting irregularity, the election of the
third and final Domain Name
Supporting Organization (DNSO) representative to
the Internet Corporation
for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) board of
directors has been
postponed till Monday. But although the final vote
has been delayed, early
returns indicate that it is increasingly unlikely
that a US Representative will be among the first three
board members chosen, a source close to the
election process told Newsbytes today.
Indeed, the only US candidate considered to have a
real shot at the final DNSO post - former
Congressman Rick White - would have been dropped
from contention had today's vote count been
affirmed, said the source, who asked to remain anonymous.
Congressional observers are holding off on
commenting about the election until after the final votes
are tallied, but the House Commerce Committee,
which oversees ICANN, is watching the election
process with mounting interest. "We are anxious to
see what decisions are made," a Committee
spokesperson said.
