WILL THERE BE PLASTIC IN YOUR PLASTIC?
A new material developed at Bell Labs could pave the way for better
smart
cards and other applications, for it essentially permits the manufacture
of
plastic transistors that can be made by cheap printing technology. "Within
the last year, there have been major advances in plastic electronics, and
these research results may allow us to make sophisticated plastic circuits
with printing techniques," said Howard Katz of Bell Labs, the lead author
of
the report published in the March 30 issue of Nature. Scientists have been
striving to make useful plastic transistors for years. The new material,
called F15, is stable and soluble at room temperature, says Katz, so it
can
be dissolved in a solvent and then printed on a plastic sheet. "The whole
process is very similar to printing a newspaper," Katz says. The new
semiconductor contains regions that are fluoridated, like Teflon, which is
both stable and protective, as are Teflon films.
