Call for Interest

The Internet2 Project now provides over 175 leading research
universities in the United States with advanced infrastructure
capable of very high performance. In addition, native IP multicast
is now deployed throughout much of the network, initial experiments
with QoS and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) have begun, and a
diverse measurement infrastructure is in place and being extended.
The applications community is beginning to take advantage of the
infrastructure, and progress in the middleware area is resulting in
early trials of shared middleware services.

As a result of these developments, and based on a successful Network
Research Workshop in June 2000
(http://www.internet2.edu/events/2000research-workshop/),
Internet2 will convene network researchers from the computer science
community to explore ways in which Internet2 could facilitate their
research (individual/multi-investigator projects or community-based
initiatives). In addition to researchers, workshop participants will
include Internet2 leaders in the areas of applications, engineering,
middleware, and infrastructure, and technical leaders from Internet2
corporate members.

Potential areas for research include but are not limited to:
1) Network security, authentication, and privacy
2) QoS
3) IPv6 and other advanced network-layer issues
4) Scalable, secure directories and digital libraries
5) Scalable operational and support capabilities
6) Transport-layer support for high-speed flows
7) High speed wireless
8) Measurement and analysis of high-performance wide-area applications

Individuals wishing to participate are asked to submit a one-page
description of the research area they wish to explore, including
explanation of the problem, the approach, and the experimental
facilities needed to support the research.  Also included should be
a list of the researcher's three most significant publications. Based
on these proposals, up to 20 projects will be selected by the Internet2
Network Research Workshop Committee, Larry Landweber, David Farber, and
Leonard Kleinrock, with notification of selection by March 20, 2001. A
maximum of two co-authors of each accepted proposal will be invited to
attend the Workshop.  One of the co-authors must be a faculty member.
Substitutes will not be permitted.  Each accepted project will be asked
to make a half hour presentation to the group.

The location of the Workshop will be near the Chicago O'Hare airport.
The final location will be announced at a later date.  Internet2 will
reimburse participants for all relevant reasonable meeting and/or travel
related expenses.
