IP: interesting discovery re Verizon Wireless

I just found out the voice mail waiting indicator on cell phones with 
Verizon only works in the home market NOT when roaming. So when I was in 
Seattle and SF no indication of voice messages waiting, real bummer. Wonder 
if that is a industry wide problem or just Verizon. Any hints?
