If you take some recent news at face value, you'd have to conclude that
the bricks have all but killed the clicks. Webvan Group is in bankruptcy
proceedings. Amazon.com is hurting. Online spinoffs like Kmart's
BlueLight.com are returning to the roost.

Don't make the mistake, however, of writing off the concept of online
retailing. And don't think that traditional stores can, or should, return
to business as usual.

Technology has given retailers new tools for efficiency and customer
support. Shopping habits have changed irrevocably. We're not returning to
the old way of doing things, at least not willingly.

What are some of the lessons from the first era of online retailing? Here
are five.
