From: UCLA Engineering [mailto:UCLAEngineering () SUPPORT UCLA EDU] Subject: Memorial Service for Professor Walter Karplus A campus memorial service for Walter J. Karplus, interim dean of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, will be held at the James West Alumni Center at 3:00 pm on Sunday, November 25. (Directions to campus - http://www.summer.ucla.edu/Resource/direct.htm. Campus map - http://www.ucla.edu/map/) Professor Karplus died Sunday, November 11 after an extended battle with cancer, at the age of 74. He made many contributions to UCLA during his more than 40 years of distinguished service, including acting as chair of the Computer Science Department from 1972 to 1979. He was head of the Computer Simulation Laboratory and served for many years as director of the Center for Experimental Computer Science at UCLA. Professor Karplus successfully employed virtual reality to allow doctors to observe how blood flows through aneurysms deep inside the human brain. He also used virtual audio to sort out critical information from the cacophony of voices in NASA's mission control room. He is survived by his wife, Takako, and two children, Maya and Tony. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Please join with us in extending condolences to the Karplus family at this difficult time. For additional information about the memorial service, please call Candice Shamia in the Office of External Affairs at 310/206-0678. Please feel free to distribute this announcement to others.
