Date: Sat, 21 Jun 2003 03:53:19 -0700 MIME-Version: 1.0The Federal Aviation Administration and the Air Transport Association have commissioned a new study to determine whether cell phones and other wireless communications devices on commercial flights do or do not interfere with navigational equipment. The UK equivalent of the FAA recently put out a news release about their study that "proves" that airline passengers' mobile phones interfere with the aircraft's equipment. Not a single person sat in a seat and made a phone call. The study involved no passengers, no airline equipment, no phones...and no aircraft.Simulators were used instead of phones; a lab bench instead of an airplane. They said that airline equipment wasn't available, was too big, etc. so they used general aviation equipment. They blasted these avionics from a horn antenna one foot away. No obstructions, such as people, or those new titanium flight deck doors, were in the way.The only "specific risk" the study actually found was from phone use in the flight deck. How many phone-using passengers do they fit in there?
