Reiter" <reiter () wirelessinternet com> Subject: Verizon to launch 1xEV-DO nationwide To: Dave Farber <dave () farber net> Hi Dave, Verizon Wireless is goinhg to expand its 1xEV-DO network across the country. Currently, the higher speed CDMA data service operates only in Washington, D.C. and San Diego. I've gotten download speeds of 200K bps - 250K bps in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, although you can get 300K bps to, perhaps, even 500K bps. Upload speeds, however, are not great -- perhaps 40K bps - 60K bps, and it often doesn't seen that fast. Verizon's current nationwide 1xRTT network offers download speeds of 40K bps - 60K bps. 1xRTT certainly is usable if you don't have WiFi or even a fast dial-up connection. Verizon is going to give WiFi a run for its money, although "money" will be an important consideration. Currently, Verizon charges $80 a month for unlimited 1x use across the country, regardless of whether it's 1xRTT or 1xEV-DO. Since that's $40 per month more than the typical WiFi subscription -- and WiFi offers much higher upload speeds -- 1xEV-DO service will appeal only to the higher end of the market, unless Verizon lowers the price. However, for people who can't get DSL or cable modem service but can get 1xEV-DO, it could be an alternative. It is not, however, a substitute for these broadband landline services that will be much cheaper and faster than 1xEV-DO.
