DoCoMo to team up with Google for better i-mode

NTT DoCoMo Inc. will team up with Google Inc., the world's No. 1
Internet search engine, to enhance its i-mode Net service custom-made
for mobile phone users, company sources said Tuesday.

Japan's largest mobile phone operator will apply the California-based
company's popular search and other functions to i-mode, which debuted in
Japan in 1999 as the world's first Net access service available on
mobile phones.

The sources said DoCoMo is considering introducing handsets next spring
featuring Google functions such as search, Gmail and schedule
management.

It also envisions developing a next-generation mobile phone equipped
with Google technology. The prospective alliance marks a turnaround for
DoCoMo, which has so far provided all types of telecommunications
services — from building infrastructure to actual service — on its own.
