Intel Says It Drops Support for One Laptop Per Child Program

     Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp., the world's largest
chipmaker, dropped its support for the One Laptop per Child
foundation because it didn't want the group's XO personal
computer to be the only device endorsed by the organization.
     Intel, which joined the foundation's board in July, reached
a ``philosophical impasse'' after founder Nicholas Negroponte
asked the company to exclusively support the XO as an
inexpensive machine for the developing world, Intel spokesman
Chuck Mulloy said today in an interview.
     ``We have long believed there is no single solution to the
needs of children in emerging and underdeveloped markets,''
Mulloy said.
     One Laptop per Child offers a device called the XO that it
eventually plans to sell for $100. Negroponte accused Intel last
year of trying to put his program out of business by introducing
a rival laptop called the Classmate PC.
     Intel fell 68 cents to $24.67 at 4 p.m. New York time in
Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The shares have risen 21 percent in
the past year.
