Thanks for flagging this. It’s déjà vu – Excite@Home’s webcam ban in a new guise!

It’s another reminder of the danger of focusing on a simplistic measure like bandwidth or speed and adds to my sense
that the this “Broadband Gap” is like Gilder’s Telecosm in missing the larger picture of connectivity.

That’s why was pleased to hear Jonathan Zittrain’s comments on the InternetForEveryone panel saying that the Internet
was something we create ourselves.

If we focus on broadband “access” then we create a role for a gatekeeper. Why shouldn’t I be able to run a server in my
house – perhaps I’m the video server for my school or club. Why do the carriers have the arbitrary authority to declare
any activity immoral and then punish it? The article may call it extremely generous but that only reinforces the idea
that the carriers are heroes for deigning to give us any connectivity at all.

How many gigabits a day does one “consume” watching HD video? What is wrong with my having an HD webcam?

This another reminder that the so-called 100Mbps miracle is just a sham and a warning to those who make that their goal
rather than something that happens as a byproduct of giving us control over our own connectivity.

The title says it all...

Rahul

p.s. Doing a bounding exercise, on a 100 Mbps symmetric link, that means

only about 3% loading. By *that* measure, it's not overly generous :P
