Rahm may have sat down with a couple lawyers and verbally answered some questions, but there’s no file folder holding all his electronic correspondence.
It’s my guess that these applications are aimed at under-secretary jobs, jobs that are just important enough that if some dirt were kicked up it could reflect back on the White House; these are jobs Obama will be counting on others to make recommendations for. He probably won’t even met half the people that fill these jobs.
And it’s not just these high level jobs that run a candidate through the ringer. During the gap between my leaving my job at MSNBC and taking my current position with the Center for Democracy and Technology, I applied for a job as a State Dept. to be a Public Diplomacy Officer in Iraq, I had to fill out two questionnaires with a hundred questions apiece. They didn’t ask for diaries or online communication, but just about anything was fair game.
