Neither a warm summer nor a cold winter are signs of climate change. Both are weather. Climate change is real, but we really need stop trying to put it into soundbites. The multi year melting of the artic ice cap is simple, demonstrate, meme-able, and hard to argue with. We need to stop confusing weather with climate, stop confusing land subsiding with ocean level rising, etc etc. As an aside, all the predictive models said this was going to be a warm wet winter. We also need to get a better handle on weather. Some of the Earth Sciences people criticized Trump’s comments, and explained the situation clearly — its just weather. Then they added the observation that last summer was extremely warm, which shows the warming climate. I’ve seen the same thing in the media, and have realized that it’s possible to reduce the entire discussion to sound bites that anyone — even politicians — can understand: if temperatures are warm one summer, that’s the changing climate, but if temperatures are cold one winter, that’s just weather. Maybe if we all get behind this, it will eliminate the confusion and ambiguity brought on by careful, reasoned discussion.
