trigger progress messages externally?

Hi,

I like the new runtime interaction.  Is there a way to trigger that by
other means than key presses?  I normally run my nmap scans in a script
w/o a controlling tty.  Something like kill -USR1 or so or sending a
char to a specific port that nmap is listening on would be really cool.
