How to detect a remote device type

Hi ,
As we known , we can detect a remote OS using '-O' parameter.
eg.'nmap -O 172.16.1.1' . And I found the tech article in
http://nmap.org/book/osdetect-methods.html .
The algorithm seems too complicated and it take about 10s for detecting
one IP in my local network.
So, my question is : Is it possible to detect whether a remote device is
a PC?
Thanks and Best Regards,
Seaman
