Nmap timing Behavior

Hello

I am not that familiar with Nmap, and I want to know, what technique or formula Nmap uses to adjust automatically the 
timing options like max retries, RTT timeout options etc. Can you please suggest me some documents which I can read to 
understand Nmap timing behavior except the source code.
