snort 1.8 beta6 build26

I've installed snort 1.8 beta6 build26 on my Debian/sid kernel 2.4 box... 
can't get it to run.

Below is what happens when it's launched.  Anyone have an idea 

a: what's happening/breaking
b: how to fix it?
