How to block a brut force attack?

How you guys would block someone whose trying to
do a brut force attack?
For example someone using a dictionary to log into
a web interface, or a web outlook access, or an SQL access

any though?

Subject: [Snort-users] [Q] Anybody Mandrake 8.0 and snort-1.8p1-0 ?!?


Just tried to get Snort installed on a new Mandrake 8.0 machine, 
and the RPM package complains about a missing libpq.so.2.0, 
while I know for sure I have it in /usr/lib via postgresql installation. 
Trying to install from the tar-ball, I get complaints about the libpcap 
entries, instead, though I have those also. I know all distros have 
their ways of putting files in different places, but I don't recall having 
had problems before with Snort and other distros ?!? Anybody 
having been successful with this combo (Mandrake8.0 and Snort)?
