Snort not logging to syslog.

Hi All, newbie here, so firgive me for dumb questions!

I have snort 1.7 running on an engarde linux server, but it isn't logging to
syslog.
The command I run to start snort is as follows (from inet.d/snort startup
script)
/var/snort/sbin/snort -u snort -g snort -s -d -D -i $INTERFACE -l \
       log -t $SNORTHOME -c $SNORTHOME/etc/snort.conf

and I have the following output options
output alert_syslog: LOG_AUTH LOG_ALERT


Have I done something stupid?
