Help with spade

I am interested in trying Spade. But I am confused with the installation
instructions.
I am running Snort 1.8.1 (Build 74).
I am not sure if I have to edit any of the spade source files that are
included with the snort source files and recompile. 
The instructions specify differences according to whether or not Snort
accepts signature ID numbers. How do I tell if it does ?
