FBSD 4.3 help w/ snort config

Im running snort 1.7 on my 4.3 FreeBSD box...i downloaded the 1.7 ruleset
from snort.org .. im  running it as a NIDS ....it fired with up no problem
however i went to test it by portscanning the box with nmap from another BSD
box ...and i didnt recieve and alerts or anything in my system mail ...( i
also use logcheck )  or in /var/log/snort.log .....no alerts....
nothing...am i missing something ??  is there a good howto on getting snort
configured correctly ?? any help is greatly appreciated.
