Note that it also can happen when mysqld (server) runs propoerly but
when mysql client does not open the right socket.
Did you try to lunch mysqld (server) by specifying the socket path ?
Something like that : mysqld --socket=/path/to/mysql.sock

Other thing to check : permission of /tmp directory and mysql.sock
file.
If your ACID runs under an user that does not have the proper rights
to access the socket file, could happen too.
