Omolayo,

The way this works is as follows:

snort -> unified file format -> barnyard

So in order to make this work, you need to enable either alert_unified or/and 
log_unified, this will make snort write to a file, and then barnyard picks it 
up.

Attached a somewhat eloborate command line for barnyard:

barnyard -c barnyard.conf -a <archivedir> -d <spooldir> -f <alert/log filename>
         -g <gen-msg.map filepath> -L <logdir> -s <sid-msg.map filepath> 
         -w <waldo filepath>
