Starting with snort 1.9 (build 228) for Win32, a service will log fatal errors to the Windows Event Log. Check there for any clues as to what is failing. Make sure that you can run snort from the command line with all the same parameters as you are asking the service to run. Then try changing your command line to a different directory, and try the same command line parameters. They should both work before you can reasonably expect the service to start. Make sure all of your specified directories exist. Make sure everything is using fully qualified paths, including all paths within snort.conf. If any of your directories contain spaces, you need to surround the entire path (or command line parameter) in double-quotes. Another test is to make use of the "-T" command line option of snort (when running snort manually from the command line). Hi, I'm in the process of using your documentation to reattempt set up of
snort.
I have a suggestion and a problem I'm hoping you can assist. I'm am working with this document: "Snort 1.9.0 b6-228 for windows..." I am at this stage: "Enabling Snort to Run as a Service" Everything has worked and tested ok to this point. However I got confused with the instructions at this point. I think I understand them, but then I received an error. As when I try to start the service I get this msg: D:\applications\snort>net start snort The Snort service is starting. The Snort service could not be started A system error has occurred. System error 1067 has occurred. The process terminated unexpectedly. I have not been able to determine what was the cause for this. I never
have
run snort as a service prior.
