Sensor Hardware

Hi-

I'm looking to have four for five sensors deployed to various subnets
off of SPAN ports (the switches are anywhere from 24-48 ports 10/100),
with a beefed up backend machine to maintain the alert DB etc... What
kind of bare minimum hardware requirements are there to handle a fairly
utilized SPAN port for a Snort sensor?
