        I used Red Hat 5.0-5.2 back in '96 and '97 until I
discovered Debian.  If you like Red Hat's up2date junk and you're
looking to avoid the troubles of having to compile all your own
stuff, you should really try Debian.  The stable installer looks
pretty arcane still, and personally I use Blade's bootbf2.4
netinst ISO's (available at http://people.debian.org/~blade/) to
get a 2.4 kernel with ReiserFS, XFS and EXT3 support right out of
the box.  You might hate dselect and apt-get initially.  But if
you take the time to learn them reasonably well, you'll be much
happier with Debian I think.

        If you want to have a really fast system and you don't
mind waiting for stuff to compile, Gentoo is really slick.  It
has all the power of BSD's ports system, but it's much easier to
update your portage installed applications than it is in any of
the BSD's port's systems.

        It irks me why people even bother with Red Hat based
systems or even Slackware at this point.  Debian and Gentoo
basically represent both sides of the coin as far as ease of use
and ability to customize packages, and the package systems in
both are next to none.

        Don't get me wrong, I run FreeBSD (5.2) on all my servers
and OpenBSD (3.4) on all my Snort boxes.  But there are times
when I wonder why I do it.  :)  It's good to know as many of them
as you can though.  Then you can decide what fits best for you
and your organization.  Geez, I even maintain a few Solaris
machines still.  Talk about masochistic!  :)
