I'm not 100% certain of this, but it appears as though it's looking for
the snort.conf file relative to the snort executable.  Try specifying an
absolute path, such as "c:\Program Files\...\snort.conf" instead of
"./snort.conf" and see if that works.

Hi all,
I am trying to run Snort on Windows XP from the command prompt and it
fails giving me the following message,
 
C:\Snort\bin>snort
Log directory = log
Initializing Network Interface \
Initializing Preprocessors!
Initializing Plug-ins!
Parsing Rules file ./snort.conf
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Initializing rule chains...
ERROR: Unable to open rules file: ./snort.conf or ././snort.conf
Fatal Error, Quitting..
C:\Snort\bin>
