[1/2OT] Oinkmaster - not updating

Sorry for the semi-off-topic, but couldn't find a hint in either my
logs, or on the 'net: oinkmaster 1.0 + snort 2.1, w/installs as
expected in the oinkmaster.conf. When running oinkmaster (-c -o
/<path_to_rules> -b /<backup_path>) I see the output as properly
identifying the differences, I get the rules downloaded in the /tmp
directory (where I created the appropriate ./rules), but the actual
update ini the <path_to_rules> never happens. Does anybody have any
idea where I could possibly look for hints  about the failure?
