New IDS hardware - comments?

I need a fast box to monitor an internet link with snort. I am looking 
for a box like this:

2x AMD Opterons
--or--
2x Intel Xeons

2GB RAM
200GB SATA disk
Intel PRO/1000 MF Dual Port adapter
        (will be connected to a NetOptics fiber tap)

I am going to run snort and ntop on the box.
I have not decided to run FreeBSD 5.3 or Gentoo Linux yet.

Have any of you had any good/bad experiences with this hardware?
