start the snort problem

hello,

I used the lastet snort version, and as I  
/etc/rc.d/init.d/snortd start, it fail.
I check the log message, and  it says:
Oct  2 18:31:14 Mars snort: FATAL ERROR:
 OpenPcap() device eth0 open:   bind: Network is down
does it means I have turn on all of my
network interface? or snort can't turn on
successfully. I also found that even I did't
turn all interface, it can be used by turning 
on manually.
